PHASE 0

Year
2023

Location
E-WERK Luckenwalde

Type
Installation, Performance

Collaboration
Kunstlabor, Moritz Schmolke, Paul Marwitz and Rurbane Realitäten

Designed in 1928 by the famous Bauhaus architect Hans Hertlein, the historic Stadtbad was once a social, productive and cultural hub of Luckenwalde and has been empty for over 30 years. In the coming years, an interdisciplinary campus at the intersection of education, culture and energy will be created around E-WERK and the Stadtbad.

For PHASE 0, the Kunststrom Laboratory collected memories, stories, opinions and suggestions about the Stadtbad and planned campus development, which was presented on 29 April through a tour co-designed with Luckenwalde residents. Developed in cooperation with the dramaturge Paul Marwitz and Rurbane Realitäten, an interdisciplinary office for innovative participation. In the dialogue between citizens and politicians, a public process was created that clarified perspectives on urban development. The aim was to use artistic means to initiate a local process that stimulates and changes structures in the long term.

We hence built a performative tour as a participatory architectural Phase 0. Hereby the voices of citiziens and their stories echoed through the Stadtbad. Finally, under the historical anthem of the place the swimming area was filled with fog to allow the audience to imagine a future activation of the Stadtbad as a collective experience.
